With the global demand for critical raw materials (CRMs) rising, seeking globally sustainable and fair solutions is crucial. The EU Commission is expanding strategic partnerships to secure access to CRMs for the defence sector and support green and digital transitions. This panel discussion will explore the significance and shortcomings of such partnerships and trade relations and discuss if this approach can maintain environmental sustainability and respect the rights of local communities and indigenous peoples. Moreover, we will discuss the conditions necessary for strong, mutually beneficial international partnerships with civil society representatives from (potential) partner countries. These requirements include local value addition, technology transfer, finance and respect for human rights and environmental laws.
