The EEB, in cooperation with the Roma Entrepreneurship Development Initiative (REDI) and Umweltdachverband and funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, will host this conference to better understand the role that the informal recycling sector plays in waste management and the circular economy in Balkan cities. In particular, we will be exploring the work of so-called “Roma green agents” in North Macedonia, who provide an environmental service to the municipality yet formally recognised. We will also use the event to provide a new narrative that recognises the service that these green agents provide.

Furthermore, we will use the event to present the results of our project on the informal recycling sector in North Macedonia and the project learnings; we will present the conclusions of our research and recommendations; and we will call on decision-makers to take action on a national level by including waste collectors as a formal part of municipal waste management plans; and at EU level by considering the impact of EU policies on waste collectors.

Hour: 15:00 – 17:00 Central European Time (CET)
