The Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA) aims to secure the supply of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) for EU industries. Its extractivist approach boosts corporate profits while threatening communities, ecosystems, and global resource justice. Together with Amigos de la Tierra/ Friends of the Earth Spain, Iberian Mining Observatory, MiningWatch Portugal and the European Environmental Bureau, we voice serious concerns about the Strategic Projects framework launched in May 2024.

This position paper, accompanied by several specific factsheets, highlights systemic problems in the Strategic Projects—social engineering, human rights violations, biodiversity loss, flawed permitting processes—and urges the exclusion of harmful mining projects. The CRMA must shift focus toward reducing CRM demand and prioritise the protection of the environment and people’s well-being over industrial competitiveness.
