The EU has committed to meet Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. To ensure this international commitment is honoured, the EU must set legally binding targets which are in line with this level of ambition.
The EEB, alongside an international movement of 43 organisations from 20 EU countries, calls on the European Commission, European Council, European Parliament and EU member states to support these proposals:
• Introduce legally binding targets for EU member states to collectively achieve a 50% reduction in EU food loss and waste by 2030
• These legally binding targets should require 50% reduction in all food loss and waste from farm to fork
• Launch a review of expanding the scope of food waste measurement and targets by EU member states to include edible food left unharvested or used on farm at primary production
