In the European Union (EU), nuclear power is once again being touted as a solution to climate change. However, as EU countries progress in energy savings and renewables, the role of nuclear power will quickly become redundant and uncompetitive.
This report shows that phasing out nuclear power alongside fossil fuels is feasible and compatible with achieving climate neutrality by 2040. Based on the Paris Agreement Compatible (PAC) energy scenario, our report looks at how a sharp energy demand reduction, coupled with faster renewable energy deployment and flexibility options, can drive the displacement of nuclear power from the energy mix in Europe.
