As input to the upcoming Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee vote on the Renewable Energy Directive (RED), the EEB sent a letter calling Members of European Parliament to step up climate ambition and improve sustainability of renewable energy. The recommendations included in this letter are based on the results of the Paris Agreement Compatible (PAC) scenario, highlighting how a 100% renewable energy system is achievable in the EU by 2040.

Namely, the letter calls for:

  • Higher ambitions for 2030 renewable energy targets
  • Strengthen biomass’ sustainability criteria
  • Scale up renewable energy use in industry
  • Enhance provisions on renewables in heating and cooling
