This joint statement focuses on the review of the EU’s Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD). Signed by 10 major stakeholders spanning drinking and wastewater service providers, local public utilities, local and regional governments, environmental civil society organisations and water-related innovation industries, the statement expresses unified support for the Commission’s proposal for an Extended Producer Responsibility scheme in revised EU wastewater law. It emphasises crucially that the heaviest polluters of our waterways should take more responsibility for meeting enormous costs of removing micropollutants from urban wastewater.
