PFAS – or forever chemicals – are receiving increased attention in the media and in the policy-making sphere because of numerous pollution scandals and public health issues. In February 2023 the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published the “universal PFAS restriction dossier” (“uPFAS”), paving the way for a broad ban of PFAS under the EU’s chemical regulation, REACH. The restriction process under REACH is long and still in an early stage. Key issues are discussed in the scientific committees for risk assessment (RAC) and socio-economic assessment (SEAC). Stakeholders from NGOs, industry and academia were invited to make a statement on the dossier and present it at the committee plenary meetings in Helsinki in June 2023.
