Recent geopolitical crises and increasing climate risks underline the urgent need for a robust and independent framework for the EU’s energy security. While the EU has made notable progress in reducing fossil fuel imports following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, dependence on fossil fuel imports from other non-EU countries remains a significant vulnerability.

The EEB advocates a rapid and fair transition to 100% renewable energy and increased energy efficiency and sufficiency to achieve true independence from fossil fuels, thereby increasing energy security and boosting the EU’s competitiveness. We welcome the opportunity to provide feedback and call on the European Commission to prioritise people and nature when revising the EU’s energy security architecture.
