Following the delay in the publication of the European Commission’s proposal for the Soil Health Law, 27 organisations – from a broad range of agricultural and environmental organisations and scientific institutions – sent a letter to Commissioners outlining the urgent need for the proposal to be published as soon as possible, before summer 2023 at the latest. This is a precondition for the Soil Health Law to progress as far as possible in the legislative process before the elections so that the co-decision can swiftly resume in 2024.
The letter also outlines recommendations for an ambitious Soil Health Law – an essential part of the EU Green Deal – that will ensure food security and protect farmers’ livelihoods.
