The European Commission has proposed the Forest Monitoring Law (FML) to establish a common framework for monitoring the resilience of Europe’s forests. This initiative aims to collect comprehensive forest data to monitor progress towards EU targets and policies, in particular on biodiversity and climate.
The data collected will facilitate evidence-based decision making, improve risk assessment capabilities and enhance preparedness measures. Understanding the health of forests and their response to climate change is crucial to ensure their resilience and ability to provide essential ecosystem services that support societal resilience.
This joint paper highlights the key benefits of the FML and underlines the importance of the legislation in safeguarding the life-support system of forests across the EU.
