As part of our work on citizenwashing, the EEB has developed a list of do’s and don’ts to support public officials responsible for public participation.

In addition to these golden rules,  the OECD Guidelines for Citizen Participation Processes are an excellent guide of minimum standards. When engaging in participatory exercises in EU environmental matters, the REAL DEAL project’s work on “Reshaping citizens’ deliberation for the European Green Deal” is another available resource. Last, but not least, the Maastricht Guidelines detail what public authorities should do when carrying out public participation in environmental decision-making, ensuring they fulfil their legal obligations under the Aarhus Convention correctly.
