Banning the destruction of unsold apparel and footwear is a crucial measure to address overproduction and mitigate the environmental impact of the textile industry.
To achieve the objectives of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation and the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, any exemptions to the ban on destroying apparel and footwear must be rare, technically justified, and strictly defined.
The European Environmental Bureau (EEB), ECOS, and RREUSE urge the Commission to tighten and clarify the conditions under which such exemptions may apply. The current draft proposal risks creating loopholes that could undermine the regulation’s purpose and perpetuate wasteful practices by fast fashion operators. The Commission must uphold the legislation’s intent and ensure that any potential loopholes are firmly closed, preserving usable products instead of wasting them.
