EU Democracy Shield: Why protective gear is not enough

Later this year the Commission is set to propose an Democracy Shield, aiming to address the most severe risks to democracy in the EU and build on the work already done under the European Democracy Action Plan and the Defence of Democracy Package.

The Democracy for Transition Coalition – a coalition of organisations working on democratic and environmental topics and co-coordinated by the EEB – has set forth its position on the shield. The coalition calls for an EU Democracy Shield which not only defends the status quo, but also ensures that democracy is fit for the future and that democratic institutions and organisations are supported over the long term.
