Response to consultation on clean energy and hydrogen strategy
As EU leaders plan to invest billions of euro in the expansion of hydrogen technology and infrastructure, the EEB assesses the European Commission’s latest proposal for its clean energy strategy.
While recognising the potential of truly green hydrogen – generated through electrolysis from renewable energy – the EEB believes future demand and use must be properly assessed. Hydrogen can play an important role as part of broader efforts to decarbonise sectors such as energy-intensive industries and transport. However, building an infrastructure fit for hydrogen without first securing enough renewable energy supply is a risk Europe cannot afford to take.
