This is a letter to the European Commission regarding the launch of an in-depth EU investigation into Belgium’s state aid for the lifetime extension of the Doel 4 and Tihange 3 nuclear power plants.
At the EEB, we are deeply concerned that the scale and form of public subsidies for these nuclear plants could undermine incentives to expand renewable energy, distort electricity markets across Europe, and thereby delay the urgent decarbonisation of Europe’s energy system and the electrification of our economies.
