This joint letter, signed by four major green EU NGOs (BirdLife Europe, the EEB, Greenpeace and WWF), is a response to worrying signs that the European Commission appears set to abandon crucial green legislation regarding agriculture and food. As part of its ‘EU Green Deal’, this European Commission launched ‘Farm to Fork’, a laudable and ambitious strategy that included plans geared towards achieving social, environmental and economic sustainability along the whole food value chain. Shelving such crucial files would be an insult to citizens across the EU. This letter calls on the Commission to ensure that key environmental legislation – particularly the promised Framework Law for Sustainable Food Systems (FSFS) and the revision to animal welfare legislation – are not abandoned, but rather pursued through the new framework of the ‘strategic dialogue’.
