This plan outlines the needed actions to drive the steel sector towards more sustainable production routes, while keeping it at the forefront of innovation. Avenues to de-pollute and decarbonise steelmaking are available: the phase-out of fossil-based production processes, the prioritisation of circularity and efficiency strategies and the use of policy levers along the value chain, such as public and private procurement.
Together, these measures should lead to make renewables-based steel the new normal in Europe.
