Together with Recycling Europe and the European Waste Management Association (FEAD), we are calling for an ambitious Green Steel Label under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). While supporting the methodology proposed by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the letter urges the European Commission to strengthen the performance thresholds so that only genuinely low-carbon and fossil-free steel qualifies as “green”. Stronger standards are essential to drive investment in clean steelmaking, support circularity, reduce reliance on imported raw materials, and ensure public procurement accelerates the decarbonisation of one of Europe’s most emissions-intensive industries.
