Europe is once again facing a fertiliser price shock driven by geopolitical instability and fossil fuel dependence. This open letter to the European Commission, signed by over 70 organisations, explains why the fertiliser crisis is fundamentally a fossil fuel crisis, exposing farmers, food systems, public health, and drinking water to repeated shocks. It also outlines practical solutions already available, including:

  • supporting agroecological and organic farming
  • expanding legume cultivation and crop rotations
  • enforcing the Nitrates Directive
  • improving nitrogen efficiency across food systems
  • investing in regional biofertiliser production and nutrient recycling

The letter argues that reducing dependency on fossil fuel-based fertilisers is essential for resilience, climate stability, farmers’ livelihoods, and long-term food production.
