How can the second-hand sector thrive within European textiles EPR? – 15 April 2026 – Brussels

Context:

The exponential growth of fast and ultra-fast fashion has led to unmanageable textile waste, with 16 kg of textile waste generated per person annually in the EU. As the mandatory separate collection of textiles rolls out, municipalities, social enterprises, and other reuse operators are overwhelmed, and 73% of EU textiles still end up landfilled or incinerated. The revised Waste Framework Directive presents a unique opportunity to implement EPR schemes that truly support the textile reuse sector in the EU and beyond.

Why attend?

  • Hear from MEPs, municipalities, social enterprises, and experts on how well-designed EPR schemes for textiles can and should look.
  • Discuss policy opportunities, including the Circular Economy Act, and ways forward for fast and ambitious implementation.

Agenda outline:

  • Welcoming remarks: MEP Saskia Bricmont
  • Setting the scene: RREUSE on the current crisis and the role of EPR
  • Roundtable: Perspectives from social enterprises, municipalities, Member States, the European Environmental Bureau, and Zero Waste Europe
  • Concluding remarks: MEP Delara Burkhardt
