With a growing coalition of businesses, municipalities, waste managers, and civil society organisations, we call on the European Commission to make food producers share the financial responsibility for preventing and collecting food waste through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
In Europe, an average of 130 kg of food per person is thrown away every year, and less than 1/3 of it is collected separately to be turn into new soil.
EPR for food products would help close this gap, while putting nutrients and organic materials back into our soils, strengthening the bioeconomy, and reducing reliance on imports.
The upcoming EU Circular Economy Act is a unique opportunity to make this happen.
