This open letter to the European Commission, signed by a group of professional associations, local authorities, non-governmental organisations and financial service providers, urges policymakers to make nature-based solutions a core pillar of the forthcoming European Framework for Climate Resilience.
Open letter to European Commission: Make nature-based solutions the first line of defence against climate disasters
The signatories argue that floods, droughts, wildfires, heatwaves and water scarcity are interconnected symptoms of a destabilised water cycle, made worse by the degradation of wetlands, forests, peatlands, floodplains and healthy soils. They warn that these growing climate risks pose major environmental, economic and societal challenges across Europe.
The letter calls on the Commission to embed nature-based solutions in legislation and support them through dedicated incentives and financing. It argues that restoring ecosystems is one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to strengthen resilience while delivering benefits for biodiversity, water security, public health and long-term economic stability.
