The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is looking to recruit a Researcher – Coal Plants and Mines.
The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is Europe’s largest network of environmental citizens’ groups with 150 member organisations in more than 30 countries.
The successful candidate will work closely together with our Industry and Communications teams to research and expose the negative impacts of coal/lignite combustion and mining in Europe.
They will work with a range of partners through Europe Beyond Coal – an alliance of health and environmental groups working together to accelerate Europe’s transition away from coal and towards safe and sustainable energy.
The work consists of:
Contributing to our collaborative effort to phase out coal in Europe by 2030 as part of the exciting campaign ‘Europe Beyond Coal’
Conducting research on European coal plants and mines that exposes their negative impacts (environmental, health, climate and social) and identifying vulnerabilities linked to lignite mining and plant operation
Coordinating EU–wide investigations into water-related impacts and service costs as well as environmental liability provisions
Using publicly available data (like the E-PRTR and the EEA’s water database) and own-initiative access to information requests and research to build stories that accelerate the transition away from coal
Writing articles based on your research for the EEB’s news site META.eeb.org and working with journalists to develop stories for leading media outlets
Conceiving data visualisations and working with designers to tell powerful stories
Managing a useful database of information to enable timely and effective engagement by national campaigners
Flagging media and outreach opportunities and working with the communications team to develop and deliver messaging to appropriate audiences
Cooperating with the Europe Beyond Coal Secretariat to secure synergies/linkages with other parts of the campaign
Identifying, developing, coordinating and assessing strategies and tactics
Assessing, reflecting and reporting on the campaign’s progress and success
Qualities and experiences required for post:
A good understanding of the environmental and climate consequences of burning coal for energy
A relevant academic degree (additional work experience may be accepted in lieu of this);
At least two years of work experience in research, ideally at a campaign group or a media organisation
Ability to quickly understand new technical information and spot opportunities to develop media-interest stories, existing technical knowledge about coal-fired power plants, the environmental impact of lignite mining and water pollution would be especially useful
Experience working with journalists and building stories for the media
A talented writer, able to present key technical dimensions of relevant topics to a non-technical audience
Fluency in spoken and written English, with fluency in other EU languages (especially Spanish, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, Romanian, Greek and German) considered an asset
Ability to multi-task, work independently and as part of a team
Knowledge of relevant EU policy instruments such as mining law, IED and the Water Framework Directive would be an asset (but is not essential for a quick learner)
Preparedness to work outside normal office hours if necessary and to travel at short notice.
The EEB offers:
A monthly pre-tax salary of around €3,300 (based on the level of experience), coupled with various benefits: holiday bonus, 13th month, pension scheme, luncheon vouchers
