The big question now is whether the firm\u2019s modularity will take a bite out of the rotten mainstream business models, or whether Apple, Samsung and others will join the revolution.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are not saying modularity is the cure for the problems of ewaste, conflict minerals and child labour. But done right, it should extend phone use, lower demand and deliver real pain relief.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pictures and video are now core functions of smartphones. While camera units rarely break, a recent technological <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/science-and-technology\/21724796-future-photography-flat-cameras-are-about-get-lot-smaller\">advance<\/a> is set to quickly make old units unattractive. Electronic waste is the world\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/science\/articles\/2013\/09\/16\/3849737.htm\">fastest growing waste type<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modularity has long existed in home computers and cars. But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/article\/gadgets\/why-lego-style-phonebloks-concept-will-fall-apart\">critics<\/a> argued that modular phones would be too expensive, heavy, large and fragile to be commercially viable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tech giants, including Apple, are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/platform\/amp\/2017\/8\/3\/16087628\/apple-e-waste-environmental-standards-ieee-right-to-repair\">accused<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/apple-right-to-repair_us_5755a6b4e4b0ed593f14fdea\">keeping<\/a> phone lifespans short to maintain high sales and profits. Apple has become the largest company by market cap and makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/platform\/amp\/2017\/8\/3\/16087628\/apple-e-waste-environmental-standards-ieee-right-to-repair\">most of its money<\/a> from phones. The average phone cycle is just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairphone.com\/en\/our-goals\/design\/\">18 months<\/a>. Irreversible glues and other hurdles are make repair more and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/innovation\/fight-right-repair-180959764\/\">more difficult<\/a>.
