{"id":109163,"date":"2022-12-14T09:08:57","date_gmt":"2022-12-14T08:08:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?p=109163"},"modified":"2023-01-12T11:39:21","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T10:39:21","slug":"one-third-of-eu-countries-have-not-yet-introduced-any-measures-to-reduce-energy-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/it\/one-third-of-eu-countries-have-not-yet-introduced-any-measures-to-reduce-energy-demand\/","title":{"rendered":"One-third of EU countries have not yet introduced any measures to reduce energy demand &#8211; New analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><b>Measures adopted by governments to reduce gas and electricity consumption vary widely across Europe and seem insufficient to meet the EU&#8217;s energy-saving targets, a <a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Saving-Energy-for-Europe-Report-1-1.pdf\">new analysis<\/a> reveals.<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s four months since European leaders agreed to reduce their countries&#8217; demand for gas by 15% and electricity by 10%. But the measures taken in this respect seem too patchy among EU countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) has examined gas and electricity <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saving measures adopted by EU states and the findings show large disparities:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>8 out of 27 EU states <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have not yet introduced <\/span><b>any measure <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to reduce gas and electricity consumption in households, businesses or public bodies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only <\/span><b>12 EU states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have adopted some <\/span><b>mandatory <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy reduction measures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countries importing large quantities of Russian gas such as <\/span><b>Italy a<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd<\/span><b> Germany<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have introduced the <\/span><b>most robust measures <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on gas savings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less gas-dependent countries like<\/span><b> France <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Spain <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are also at the EU<\/span><b> forefront<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of energy reduction measures, targeting both public entities and the private sector, households as well as industry and small businesses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>Netherlands, Austria <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Eastern European states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to have <\/span><b>weaker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> energy reduction measures in place.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite being among the heavily gas-dependent countries (between 30 and 40% of the energy mix), the <\/span><b>Netherlands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Croatia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have only introduced <\/span><b>voluntary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gas-saving measures.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Romania <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><b> Lithuania<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite their heavy reliance on fossil fuels, have not implemented <\/span><b>any measure <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at all to reduce energy consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Davide Sabbadin, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deputy Policy Manager for Climate at EBB, said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe sooner we reduce our energy usage, the quicker we reduce pressure on high energy prices, providing effective relief for households and industry. All signals tell us that filling gas storage before next year&#8217;s winter might be far more challenging. Reducing the energy demand must be the top priority for policymakers, rather than short-term measures to keep us locked into an inefficient, fossil-fuel-hungry model.
