{"id":108432,"date":"2022-10-17T08:28:35","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T06:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?post_type=library&#038;p=108432"},"modified":"2022-10-17T09:18:11","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T07:18:11","slug":"open-letter-calling-for-democratic-reform-of-eu-fiscal-rules","status":"publish","type":"library","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/it\/library\/open-letter-calling-for-democratic-reform-of-eu-fiscal-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Open letter calling for deep and urgent reform of EU fiscal rules to accelerate the green and just transition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This document is also available in\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1JdaFkvgUvz9QVkV14fg0nX_kLcjq6fuo98j_8VoKmgQ\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German<\/a>, <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1fFCDkIqnKgMhvuarXKxoW389NsbCywKIwee2-0ok0bA\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French<\/a>, and <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1tLtoClmgzDYUFQls8tpwtFbKIYYB5qVobc5GJDLRwAc\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polish<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahead of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Council and the Commission&#8217;s orientation paper on economic governanc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e and fiscal rules expected in<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">October, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fiscalmatters.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fiscal Matters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coalition <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that brings together civil society organisations, academics, think tanks, and trade union leaders p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ublished <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an open letter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calling for deep and urgent reform to accelerate the green and just transition, restore trust in the EU and build a solid foundation for a sustainable future<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We are calling upon EU leaders\u00a0to ensure the following principles are at the core of the reform:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Build a future-proof economy with jobs for all<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Allow fiscal flexibility to target a fully employed economy with decent and well-paid clean jobs available to all.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fill the green funding gap and make Europe energy independent from fossil fuels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Targeted and scaled-up green public investment is needed to remain below the 1.5 Celsius goal of the Paris Climate Agreement. A reformed fiscal framework should ensure the alignment of Member States\u2019 public spending with the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as other environmental objectives including reducing resource use and zero pollution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reinvest in public services and social protection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; Social expenditure must guarantee universal access to quality basic public services, as well as a social safety net, so no one falls through the cracks and the care economy is central. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Target human, economic and environmental well-being<\/b> &#8211; Make durable well-being the primary objective of EU economic policy by establishing adequate indicators within the EU\u2019s fiscal policy framework and making sure the rules do not translate again into austerity.
