Fire, drought and storms are no longer exceptions\u00a0\u2013 they\u2019re the new norm. Not every\u202fextreme\u202fweather incident can be directly attributed to climate change, but a warmer climate<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">fuels more frequent and intense heatwaves, heavy rainfall, and prolonged droughts.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Across Europe and beyond, communities are bearing the cost of climate change across all aspects of life:\u00a0agriculture, health, transport, equality, security, and cultural identity.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f The climate crisis is deeply interconnected with <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">biodiversity loss, pollution, and social inequality.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> And while its consequences are felt worldwide,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> those most vulnerable are often the hardest hit, despite being the least responsible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The EEB believes that the EU has\u202fboth\u202fa historical responsibility\u202fand the\u202fcapacity\u202fto act<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> We must lead the fight against this global crisis.\u00a0The Paris climate agreement needs strong leadership in order to be successful. Yet, powerful vested interests\u00a0are pushing back against even the limited levels of ambition that the EU has set itself. The cost of inaction is enormous. <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The technologies and policy tools to drastically cut emissions are there<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but entrenched interests are standing in the way.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The EEB&#8217;s Climate and Energy team is focused on achieving decarbonisation through a shift to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">100% renewables.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In close cooperation with Climate Action Network Europe and other partners, we have shown how this transition can align the EU with its Paris Agreement commitments through a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/hu\/library\/building-a-paris-agreement-compatible-pac-energy-scenario\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Paris Agreement Compatible (PAC) scenario<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A key component of our strategy is <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">energy-saving policies<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0which we are promoting in collaboration with our\u00a0partners in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energycoalition.eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Coalition for Energy Savings<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. If mishandled, it could put our climate goals out of reach and leave renewables stuck on paper instead of powering communities. That\u2019s why we work closely with partners\u00a0in the\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coolheatingcoalition.eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Cool Heating Coalition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to promote market-ready,\u00a0renewable-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/renewableheat.eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">solutions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Beyond energy, we also address the climate impact of refrigerants. Through our work with partners from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/life-effect.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">LIFE EFFECT project<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we\u00a0highlight\u00a0that the new EU carbon pricing scheme (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/eu-emissions-trading-system-eu-ets\/ets2-buildings-road-transport-and-additional-sectors_en\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ETS-2<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">) will only be effective under certain conditions.\u00a0First, high-emission countries like Germany, France, and Italy must take additional measures to cut emissions to prevent carbon pricing from driving up costs across the entire EU. Second, revenues must be distributed in a transparent way that benefits all citizens and especially those strongly affected by ETS-2. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/hu\/library\/three-guiding-principles-for-national-social-climate-plans\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Social Climate Fund<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a first step in that direction, but it remains insufficient in size and scope.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"-\" data-font=\"Arial\" data-listid=\"8\" data-list-defn-props=\"{&quot;335551671&quot;:4,&quot;335552541&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559991&quot;:360,&quot;469769226&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;469769242&quot;:[8226],&quot;469777803&quot;:&quot;left&quot;,&quot;469777804&quot;:&quot;-&quot;,&quot;469777815&quot;:&quot;hybridMultilevel&quot;}\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"7\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We call out fake solutions: <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/hu\/library\/nuclear-phase-out-how-renewables-energy-savings-and-flexibility-can-replace-nuclear-in-europe\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">nuclear energy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and oversized <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/hu\/library\/policy-brief-a-sustainable-hydrogen-strategy-for-the-eu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">hydrogen<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are distractions from a fast and effective decarbonisation pathway. The rapid move to renewables and resource efficiency is not in everyone\u2019s interest. The nuclear and fossil fuel industries are investing incredible resources to convince decision-makers that costly, dirty, and often unproven technologies \u2014such as Small Modular Reactors, CCS, and oversized hydrogen\u2014 are the future. Their goal? To secure public funds to perpetuate their business models.
