Our house is on fire<\/span>.<\/span> T<\/span>he EU <\/span>remains<\/span> heavily <\/span>dependent on foreign energy imports<\/span>,<\/span> and its citizens are increasingly feeling the weight of energy bills<\/span>.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>The\u202f<\/span>time for action<\/span> is now<\/span>.<\/span> While<\/span> progress is being made on<\/span> EU <\/span>climate legislation,<\/span>\u00a0much more needs to be done \u2014<\/span>\u00a0and fast.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

Another year, another <\/span><\/b>climate record shattered<\/span><\/b><\/a>. Fire, drought and storms are no longer exceptions\u00a0\u2013 they\u2019re the new norm. Not every\u202fextreme\u202fweather incident can be directly attributed to climate change, but a warmer climate<\/span> fuels more frequent and intense heatwaves, heavy rainfall, and prolonged droughts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Across Europe and beyond, communities are bearing the cost of climate change across all aspects of life:\u00a0agriculture, health, transport, equality, security, and cultural identity.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u202f The climate crisis is deeply interconnected with <\/span>biodiversity loss, pollution, and social inequality.<\/span><\/b> And while its consequences are felt worldwide,<\/span> those most vulnerable are often the hardest hit, despite being the least responsible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The EEB believes that the EU has\u202fboth\u202fa historical responsibility\u202fand the\u202fcapacity\u202fto act<\/span>.<\/span><\/b> We must lead the fight against this global crisis.\u00a0The Paris climate agreement needs strong leadership in order to be successful. Yet, powerful vested interests\u00a0are pushing back against even the limited levels of ambition that the EU has set itself. The cost of inaction is enormous. <\/span>The technologies and policy tools to drastically cut emissions are there<\/span><\/b>, but entrenched interests are standing in the way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The EEB’s Climate and Energy team is focused on achieving decarbonisation through a shift to <\/span>100% renewables.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0In close cooperation with Climate Action Network Europe and other partners, we have shown how this transition can align the EU with its Paris Agreement commitments through a <\/span>\u202f<\/span>Paris Agreement Compatible (PAC) scenario<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A key component of our strategy is <\/span>energy-saving policies<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0which we are promoting in collaboration with our\u00a0partners in the <\/span>Coalition for Energy Savings<\/span><\/a>. Moving away from fossil fuels and toward a more<\/span> resource-efficient energy system will also bring wider benefits to society: improving public health, lowering energy prices, and protecting communities impacted by mining.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
