Brus<\/strong>sels, 15 June 2026<\/strong> \u2013<\/span>\u00a0The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) today launched the\u00a0Ambient Air\u00a0Quality Directive (AAQD)\u00a0Transposition Tracker<\/a>, a new online tool monitoring how EU Member States are\u00a0transposing\u00a0the revised\u00a0AAQD\u00a0into national legislation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The revised AAQD, adopted in 2024, sets stricter\u00a0EU air quality standards\u00a0and introduces stronger provisions on air quality planning, monitoring, public participation\u00a0and information, access to justice, and compensation for damage to human health caused by illegal air pollution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Member States\u00a0must\u00a0transpose the\u00a0new Directive into national\u00a0law\u00a0by 11 December 2026. With the tracker,\u00a0the\u00a0EEB and\u00a0its\u00a0member\u00a0organisations\u00a0active in the countries\u00a0it\u00a0covers\u00a0are providing\u00a0an overview of national\u00a0progress,\u00a0highlighting good practices,\u00a0identifying\u00a0gaps and risks, and helping\u00a0promote ambition and transparency,\u00a0Including\u00a0through meaningful public participation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Air pollution\u00a0remains\u00a0the largest environmental health risk in Europe, contributing to\u00a0around\u00a0300,000\u00a0premature deaths<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0a wide range of illnesses\u00a0each year and disproportionately affecting children, older people, and communities living near major sources of pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n

Margherita Tolotto, Head of Air and Noise at the European Environmental Bureau, said:<\/p>\n

“Adopting the revised AAQD was an important milestone, but the real test begins now, with Member States showing how serious they are about cutting air pollution, starting from setting clear and ambitious national rules which go beyond the minimum requirements established by the Directive itself<\/em>. This tracker helps shine a light on progress, identify barriers, and support accountability throughout the process.”<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
