Farming is one of the greatest forces\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/hr\/next-week-the-eu-votes-on-a-e350bn-farm-pay-check-to-trash-nature\/\">trashing the planet<\/a>. We are feeling that heat, and yet the EU just voted to pour flames on the fire. The CAP should be a major force for good, but is being powerfully misdirected. Whatever transition to ecological farming was promised in the EU Green Deal is now on hold.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Greta Thunberg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GretaThunberg\/status\/1318558111918075904?s=20\">said<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>\u201cIn the midst of a climate and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/highlights\/latest-evaluation-shows-europes-nature\/\">ecological emergency<\/a>\u00a0the EU is about to lock nearly \u20ac400 billion into a new agricultural policy, completely ignoring climate and biodiversity. And no-one even reports about it!? Even a child knows this isn&#8217;t how democracy is supposed to work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">EEB agriculture policy officer <strong>C\u00e9lia Nyssens<\/strong> said<strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>\u201cEurope has talked tough on climate and made a big deal of its Green Deal. These two goals will go nowhere without a transformative EU farm policy. We are now calling on the European Commission to withdraw this disastrous CAP and retable something substantially better.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On Monday, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/highlights\/latest-evaluation-shows-europes-nature\/\">report<\/a>\u00a0for the European Environment Agency found Europe\u2019s nature in \u201cserious, continuing decline,\u201d with farming \u201cthe most common pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><b>What was decided<\/b><\/h4>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GretaThunberg\/status\/1318558111918075904?s=20\">undemocratic<\/a>\u00a0and dramatic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/eeb.org\/cap-briefing-5004762\">twist<\/a>\u00a0in the Parliamentary agenda, a large majority of MEPs voted for what the EEB dubbed a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/hr\/coup-for-big-farmers-worth-e-billions-in-eu-payments\/\">stinking deal<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ministers agreed that 20%\u00a0of income support payments to farmers should go through the flagship environmental element of the CAP, called \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Eco-schemes\">Eco-Schemes<\/a>\u2019. EP agreed on 30% figures. But both institutions introduced potentially contradictory economic goals, likely to gain the lion\u2019s share of funding and make a mockery of the fund\u2019s name. NGOs suggested 50 percent with strict environmental goals.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ministers and Parliament both weakened conditions for CAP payments.
