{"id":98266,"date":"2019-03-01T16:50:25","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T15:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?p=98266"},"modified":"2019-03-13T10:16:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T09:16:34","slug":"major-safety-gaps-for-most-chemical-files-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/fr\/major-safety-gaps-for-most-chemical-files-official\/","title":{"rendered":"Major safety gaps for most chemical files &#8211; official"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Unsafe and uncontrolled chemical use\u00a0in 71% of substances<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemical companies failed to provide important safety information in nearly three quarters (74% or 211 of 286) of cases checked by authorities, breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Registration,_Evaluation,_Authorisation_and_Restriction_of_Chemicals\">REACH laws<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This from\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0European Chemicals Agency<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Chemicals_Agency\">ECHA<\/a>) 2018 progress <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/echa.europa.eu\/dossier-evaluation-progress-2018\">report<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released yesterday.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officials had to demand more data on\u00a0important safety aspects, including the mutagenicity, prenatal development and\u00a0reproductive effects of substances for humans\u00a0and persistence, bioaccumulation and\u00a0toxicity in the environment.\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agency\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said the safety gaps are in line with previous years and that companies need to improve legal compliance.\u00a0Industry group CEFIC\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cefic.org\/media-corner\/newsroom\/cefic-reaction-to-echas-progress-report-on-dossier-and-substance-evaluation-in-2018\">acknowledged<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the problem.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agency\u00a0noted that member states need to develop risk management measures to control unsafe commercial use of chemicals\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 71% (15\u00a0of 22) of substances checked.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Environmental Bureau welcomed the\u00a0report for its clarity\u00a0and recommendations. It agreed with ECHA that member states should speed up evaluation and resolve data\u00a0gaps to minimise chemical exposure.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/>EEB chemicals policy manager Tatiana Santos said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis report shows there is still a mountain to climb on chemical safety in Europe. The figures indicate that protection of human health and the environment is not guaranteed for almost three quarters of chemicals evaluated in 2018. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;European authorities are in the dark for most substances because the chemical industry has failed to demonstrate the safety of its products. Where officials have the information they need to declare a substance unsafe, in most cases no action follows. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Acknowledging the problem is the first step to change, so we welcome that ECHA has pinpointed the challenges and urged governments to step up their work.
