[1]<\/h4>\n<p>The European Parliament has voted today in favour of measures to make consumer goods, like TVs and other home appliances, longer lasting and repairable.<\/p>\n<p>Praising the Ecodesign\u00a0policy, which saves consumers energy and money, they also want to see faster decision-making and better market surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>The Coolproducts coalition said the vote is an important step forward to reduce waste and protect consumers.<\/p>\n<p><em>Coolproducts is a campaign led by the\u00a0<strong>European Environmental Bureau (EEB)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>ECOS<\/strong>working to ensure a better product policy for European citizens and the environment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With today\u2019s vote, the Parliament has requested the introduction of resource efficiency requirements in the EU legislation on product design known as Ecodesign. [2]<\/p>\n<p>The report argues that better product design is necessary to transition to a circular economy, where waste is prevented, and to meet the agreed national targets to curb CO2 emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Ecodesign\u00a0have so far mainly focused on making fridges, TVs and other appliances more energy efficient \u2013 generating both energy and monetary savings across the EU. [3]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stephane Arditi,<\/strong>\u00a0policy manager at the EEB and coordinator of Coolproducts, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cEurope\u2019s \u2018take-make-use-throw\u2019 economy is costing consumers money and choking our environment.\u00a0<\/em><em>Given its success, it makes sense to expand ecodesign to make products that last longer and are easier to repair and recycle.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Arditi\u00a0<\/strong>added:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWith 80% of the environmental impacts of products determined at design stage, better product design is necessary to\u00a0transition to a circular economy.\u201d<\/em>[4]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is now expected that the EU Commission, and the national authorities,\u00a0will take up the recommendations supported by an overwhelming majority of the directly elected\u00a0members of the European Parliament. Meanwhile, the Energy Labelling regulation pulls consumers towards the best products by giving them an impartial A to G ranking based on their energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>[3] The European Commission estimates that,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/energy\/en\/news\/report-eu-energy-efficiency-requirements-products-generate-financial-and-energy-savings\">thanks to Ecodesign and Energy Labelling<\/a>, every home in Europe will see their energy bills reduced by nearly \u20ac500 per year.
