Echoing <\/span>a<\/span> call<\/span> by the Czec<\/span>h government<\/span> supported by<\/span> the Ministers from<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Luxemburg and Spain <\/span>at the <\/span>Environment<\/span> Council<\/span> today<\/span> [1]<\/span>, <\/span>the E<\/span>uropean Environmental Bureau<\/span> warns that <\/span>people<\/span>‘s<\/span> health and environment will take a hit <\/span>if the current budget cuts proposed in the European Commission\u2019s draft EU 2028\u20132034 multiannual financial framework are approved.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are slashing the budget for our own life support. Europe\u2019s future depends on strong environmental rules and investment in nature – weaken them, and we weaken our own access to clean water, fresh air, disaster protection and other necessities for survival. The Commission\u2019s very own analysis concluded that <\/span><\/i>every euro invested in nature restoration can generate long-term economic benefits of \u20ac8 to \u20ac38\u201d<\/span><\/i>, said <\/span>Sergiy Moroz, Policy Manager for Nature at the European Environmental Bureau<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The European Environment Agency\u2019s latest flagship report [2] warns that Europe remains far off track on its environmental and climate targets – from soil to water to biodiversity – posing serious risks to Europe\u2019s stability and security.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the 2025 Environmental Implementation Review [3], Europe currently invests barely half of what is needed to protect biodiversity and soil health. Even the flagship Nature Restoration Regulation faces a large funding gap: the Czech Ministry of the Environment cites unpublished European Commission estimates of \u20ac11.8\u201313.1 billion per year required for its implementation until 2030 [1]. Environmental ministers have also highlighted that \u201clack of funding and human resources has considerably hampered the implementation of water legislation across sectors\u201d, in their conclusions on the Water Resilience Strategy [4].<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite this, the European Commission has yet to clarify where the necessary public funding will come from, while promoting untested private financing schemes such as nature credits [5]. At the same time, it proposes cuts to climate and nature funding and an end to biodiversity tracking\u00a0– measures that risk weakening accountability and undermining Europe\u2019s environmental, public health and security objectives.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The EEB calls on <\/span>ministers [<\/span>6<\/span>]<\/span> to make the next EU<\/span> long term<\/span> budget a genuine investment in climate and nature, with <\/span>50%<\/span> for environmental priorities and at least <\/span>10%<\/span><\/span> for biodiversity<\/span> as well as <\/span>ensure <\/span>dedicated and adequately resourced budget line for LIFE\u00a0actions<\/span>.<\/span> The NGO also urges the Commission to publish without delay the overdue report on financing the Nature Restoration Regulation.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
