{"id":118908,"date":"2025-10-15T09:57:53","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T07:57:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?p=118908"},"modified":"2025-10-15T10:01:24","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T08:01:24","slug":"exposed-uncontrolled-biogas-expansion-funded-by-public-purse-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/fr\/amazons-double-standard\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon\u2019s toxic double standard exposed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ahead of the Sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP-6), the Zero Mercury Working Group (ZMWG) has released a new report documenting the ongoing availability of dangerous and often illegal mercury-added skin lightening products (SLPs) on Amazon platforms worldwide.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite a recent U.S. State of California legal settlement requiring Amazon.com to enforce its prohibited product policies for toxic SLPs, ZMWG testing shows that Amazon operations across more than 23 countries, serving 100+ markets, continue to allow these products.\u00a0 This amounts to a double standard that disproportionately endangers consumers in the Global South.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Sofia Ch\u00e1vez Arce,\u00a0<\/strong>Director General of Casa Cem in Mexico City, said<strong>:\u00a0<\/strong><em>\u201d\u00a0<\/em><em>Global South citizens must be granted the same right to safe products as Amazon.com customers in the U.S. We are not second-class\u202fAmazon customers. Amazon&#8217;s double standards are unacceptable.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>ZMWG and its partners in the United States, France, Belgium, India, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates purchased suspect SLPs from Amazon websites earlier this year in their respective countries.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 31 creams tested, 25 were found to contain mercury thousands of times higher than the 1 ppm usual legal limit set by national governments and the \u201czero mercury\u201d standard set by the Minamata Convention on Mercury.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Michael Bender<\/strong>, ZMWG co-coordinator, said:\u00a0<em>\u201cWe strongly urge Amazon to apply the same Third-Party Seller requirements that it imposes in the U.S., globally. That means requiring testing of SLPs for mercury before they can be offered for sale and adhering to the Amazon Central Seller requirements.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tests conducted in Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, and India show that multiple mercury added SLPs remain widely available on Amazon websites, exposing unsuspecting customers to serious risks.\u00a0 In contrast, only a few mercury-added SLPs were found on Amazon websites in the US and in the European Union (EU).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Satish Sinha<\/strong>, Associate Director at the Toxics Link, said:\u00a0<em>\u201cThe continued availability of highly toxic, non-compliant skin lightening creams on Amazon.in is a serious violation of national regulations. Amazon must enforce its prohibited product policies in India to prevent sales of mercury-laden products.\u201d\u202f\u202f<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>ZMWG asserts that Amazon platforms worldwide should voluntarily accept full legal responsibility for ensuring that all products sold comply with health, consumer and product safety laws. Anything less, they argue, contradicts Amazon\u2019s claim that it \u201c\u2026strives to be Earth\u2019s most customer-centric company, which includes ensuring that every product available for sale is safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Raphaelle Catte<\/strong>, Mercury Policy Officer at the European Environmental Bureau, said:\u00a0<em>\u201cThese findings echo the EU debate on unsafe product imports via e-commerce.\u202fThe US Amazon settlement shows that platforms can be part of the solution: requiring independent testing and compliance from third-party sellers is exactly the kind of approach we want to see in the EU.\u201c\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Products were tested in accredited laboratories in the EU and the
