Farm ministers today gave a cool welcome to EU plans for new laws to greatly reduce pesticides, fertilisers and boost ecological farming.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

At a meeting in Luxembourg, the European Environmental Bureau understands that ministers from across Europe merely \u201ctook note\u201d of an EU <\/span>Farm to Fork Strategy<\/span><\/a> and demanded lengthy impact assessments before any new legal proposals. However, today, a <\/span>report<\/span><\/a> for the European Environment Agency found Europe’s nature in \u201cserious, continuing decline,\u201d with farming \u201cthe most common pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tomorrow ministers will agree their position on Europe\u2019s next five year farm policy, starting 2023, a mammoth \u20ac350 billion fund for farmers that will have a <\/span>huge impact<\/span><\/a> on the environment. Leaks suggest it will fundamentally clash with Farm to Fork, creating <\/span>\u201cillegal\u201d incoherence<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Asger<\/b> Mindegaard<\/strong>, a policy officer for agriculture at the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThese ministers are a lost cause, being chained to industrial farming interests. That\u2019s bad news for nature, but it is also egg on the face of the European Commission, since farming is a big part of the much-hyped European Green Deal. That deal is in danger of becoming hot air. To avoid it becoming an embarrassment, the Commission may have to withdraw this farm policy and come back with one that is better aligned with the EU Green Deal.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
