In the film he plays real-life lawyer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/10\/magazine\/the-lawyer-who-became-duponts-worst-nightmare.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Biliott<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who uncovered massive PFAS<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/2020\/01\/pfas-contamination-safe-drinking-water-study\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of US drinking water by DuPont. The parallels between chemical pollution in the US and EU are striking, NGOs say.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Per-_and_polyfluoroalkyl_substances\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFAS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a group of nearly 5,000 substances that are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/es0710499\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highly persistent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, toxic, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eureau.org\/resources\/briefing-notes\/3934-briefing-note-on-moving-forward-on-pmt-and-vpvm-substances\/file\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very mobile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and currently impossible to clean up. They are used in goods such as waterproof clothing, non-stick kitchenware and even dental floss. They are detected in the vast majority of those tested, including babies. Exposure is linked to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/themes\/human\/chemicals\/emerging-chemical-risks-in-europe\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health impacts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as lower birth weight and size, reduced hormone levels and delayed puberty, thyroid disease, liver damage, kidney and testicular cancer. Prenatal exposure to some PFAS can disrupt brain development and cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4117925\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major birth defects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Scientists say PFAS pollution in Europe is a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbm4eu.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/HBM4EU_D5.3_Scoping_paper_v1.1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potentially serious public health problem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d with \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbm4eu.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/HBM4EU_D5.3_Scoping_paper_v1.1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alarming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d levels found in children, often higher than in adults. Governments estimate the health costs at up to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/norden.diva-portal.org\/smash\/get\/diva2:1295959\/FULLTEXT01.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20ac84 billion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/norden.diva-portal.org\/smash\/get\/diva2:1295959\/FULLTEXT01.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sites across Europe are thought to create PFAS pollution. That is likely the tip of the iceberg. Many PFAS found in the environment are not registered and European authorities are unaware of who is using what, where and how toxic it is. Just two groups (PFOA and PFOS derivatives) have been regulated in Europe in the last 60 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Johanna Sandahl, President of the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPFAS pollution is out of control in the US and in Europe. If it takes an angry Hulk to wake Brussels up, so be it. The PFAS mess is a symptom of a systemic problem at the heart of European chemical controls. Industry should not be allowed to sell substances before they are proven safe, but it does. It should not take a decade to catch up with the dangerous ones, but it often can. Our children should not be born contaminated with toxic substances, but they are. The EU needs to get a grip on a reckless chemical industry, fast.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGOs want all PFAS and other persistent or bioaccumulative chemicals to be phased out and EU chemical laws <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/fr\/library\/a-chemicals-strategy-as-part-of-the-european-green-deal-time-to-deliver\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strengthened<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Environment ministers have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2019\/06\/26\/council-conclusions-on-chemicals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the European Commission to phase out all non-essential uses of PFAS. The Netherlands is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.consilium.europa.eu\/doc\/document\/ST-15039-2019-INIT\/en\/pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drafting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a comprehensive restriction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Waters goes on general release in Italy on 20 February, in Belgium and France 26 February, in the United Kingdom on 28 February and in Germany on 16 April.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PFAS &#8220;out of control&#8221; with child contamination &#8220;alarming&#8221; 5 February, Brussels \u2013 Oscar-nominated actor Mark Ruffalo visits the European Parliament today to present Dark Waters.
