{"id":100735,"date":"2019-12-09T11:00:06","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T10:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?p=100735"},"modified":"2019-12-12T13:01:25","modified_gmt":"2019-12-12T12:01:25","slug":"industry-wish-list-copy-pasted-into-eu-green-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/fr\/industry-wish-list-copy-pasted-into-eu-green-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Industry wish list \u2018copy &#038; pasted\u2019 into EU Green Deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">End chemical pollution &#8211; union, consumer and green groups demand<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EU risks missing a major opportunity to protect workers, consumers and the environment from serious and growing chemical pollution, the largest consumer, green and union groups warned today, days before the EU announces a raft of environmental policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manmade toxic chemicals are linked to rising <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/ipcs\/publications\/chemicals-public-health-impact\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6396757\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laneur\/article\/PIIS1474-4422(13)70278-3\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developmental<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and environmental problems, including the collapse in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/oct\/18\/warning-of-ecological-armageddon-after-dramatic-plunge-in-insect-numbers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insect, bird<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and aquatic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/sep\/27\/orca-apocalypse-half-of-killer-whales-doomed-to-die-from-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mammal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> populations. Last week a damning European Environment Agency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/highlights\/soer2020-europes-environment-state-and-outlook-report?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=The%20European%20environment%20-%20state%20and%20outlook%202020&amp;utm_content=The%20European%20environment%20-%20state%20and%20outlook%202020+CID_0808c958d550b8f960c38e634fbfa2fc&amp;utm_source=EEA%20Newsletter&amp;utm_term=Read%20more\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that hazardous chemicals were one of Europe\u2019s main threats and most off-track policy areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The civil society groups called on the European Commission to strengthen failing EU chemical safety laws (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/fr\/library\/joint-letter-for-better-eu-chemical-safety-laws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and political <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/fr\/library\/joint-policy-recommendations-for-better-eu-chemical-safety-laws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The Commission is set to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/ebs\/both\/20191211\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its flagship environment programme, the European Green Deal, on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaks of the Commission plans suggest president Von der Leyen may fail to follow through on her public commitment to a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/sites\/beta-political\/files\/political-guidelines-next-commission_en.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zero pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d goal. The Green Deal has been expected to reiterate the commitment made by all three EU institutions to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/chemicals\/non-toxic\/index_en.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-toxic Environment Strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, already overdue, in line with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/strategy\/international-strategies\/sustainable-development-goals_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but the leaked plans have placed this in doubt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The leaked plans reflect <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1FKYWPUnoWeLrOYzUAgtJ2lRJy1CpYqTY5JAMAxBy4-A\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> chemical industry preferences. A \u201cpackage of regulatory measures\u201d by 2021 was part of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euractiv.com\/section\/energy-environment\/news\/leaked-brussels-draft-proposal-for-a-european-green-deal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">draft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> green deal that emerged on 29 November, but was removed in a second draft seen by the EEB on 2 December. That version contained no chemical policy reforms whatsoever. An \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corporateeurope.org\/en\/environment\/2018\/12\/innovation-principle-trap\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovation principle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is present in a leaked Commission <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/politico.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=e26c1a1c392386a968d02fdbc&amp;id=ddb81989c5&amp;e=34b3aafeb6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presentation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, roughly a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copy and paste<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of industry proposals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Industry influence in the European Green Deal\" width=\"1220\" height=\"686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PnN5_rVu4Vs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Industry positions occupy much of a leaked European Green Deal section on chemical safety<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environment ministers from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Spain wrote to the Commission last week again demanding a \u201cnon-toxic environment strategy\u201d by 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>EEB secretary general, Jeremy Wates, said:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can only hope that the latest leaks do not fully reflect the current state of thinking in the Commission or that crucial changes to the draft will be made in the remaining days. The biggest environmental policy announcement in years should not feature a rough copy &amp; paste from the wish list of an industry that is doing so much harm to human health and the environment. The so-called innovation principle is shorthand for the kind of freewheeling corporate behaviour that has led to widespread microplastic and nano chemical pollution around the world in the name of progress, with no precautions whatsoever.
