The Regulation\u00a0 mainly implements the Minamata Convention (named after the city of Minamata <\/i><i>in Japan where the release of methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from a chemical factory caused <\/i><i>mercury poisoning of the nearby living population, resulting in serious neurological damages), but also <\/i><i>strengthens mercury-related measures from earlier European legal acts (e.g. Regulation 1102\/2008) and <\/i><i>further develops the legal framework in a number of areas.
