Under the revised Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), Member States must designate Renewable Acceleration Areas to speed up wind and solar deployment in low-risk locations, with simplified permitting and proper public participation.

This analysis with Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe finds that, despite some progress in planning and legal frameworks, no major EU country has yet formally designated these areas. As a result, all assessed countries are set to miss the February deadline. The findings point to a gap between EU commitments and implementation, at a time when accelerating renewables is key to reducing energy costs and dependence on fossil fuels.
