{"id":119829,"date":"2026-03-05T10:15:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T09:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?p=119829"},"modified":"2026-03-05T12:05:44","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T11:05:44","slug":"ursula-von-der-leyen-refuses-to-meet-pfas-pollution-affected-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/es\/ursula-von-der-leyen-refuses-to-meet-pfas-pollution-affected-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Ursula von der Leyen refuses to meet PFAS pollution-affected communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brussels, 5 March 2026 \u2013 <\/span><b>PFAS frontline communities have, for the third time since 2023 [1], had <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Letter-to-Ursula-von-der-Leyen-from-PFAS-affected-frontline-communities.pdf\"><b>their requests to meet Ursula von der Leyen<\/b><\/a><b> denied due to \u201cscheduling conflicts\u201d, according to the Commission President\u2019s cabinet.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26 people from PFAS hotspots in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands travelled to Brussels with the support of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/es\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Environmental Bureau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to share their experiences and personal testimonies with President von der Leyen about how \u201cforever chemicals\u201d are severely affecting their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unable to meet her, they made their voices heard today in an action in front of the European Commission, calling for an end to PFAS pollution. One of their banners read: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cvon der Leyen meets poisoners, ignores us.\u201d<br \/>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-119844\" src=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412-1024x577.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412-1024x577.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412-768x433.jpg 768w, https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412-133x75.jpg 133w, https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412-480x270.jpg 480w, https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/P1122412.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width:767px) 480px, (max-width:1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the <\/span><b>Commission\u2019s doors remain closed to citizens<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demanding bold action on PFAS pollution [2] to protect public health and the environment, they remain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/media\/photo\/P-068971\/00-13\"><b>wide open to the chemical industry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: nearly 70% of meetings held last year by Commission cabinet members reportedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/corporateeurope.org\/en\/2026\/02\/behind-chemical-industry-lobby-blitz-undermine-eu-safety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">involved industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> representatives. On 11 February, for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/es\/european-industrial-deal-ignores-victims-of-chemical-pollution\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third year running<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen ignored chemical pollution victims and, instead, addressed EU industry leaders in Antwerp, in an event coordinated by the chemicals industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is deeply concerning that time has been made available to engage with representatives of the chemical industry, whose activities have had serious and lasting impacts on our lives, while our repeated requests for dialogue have gone unanswered<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said PFAS frontline communities in their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Letter-to-Ursula-von-der-Leyen-from-PFAS-affected-frontline-communities.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter to von der Leyen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Across Europe, <\/span><b>PFAS frontline communities are mobilising to demand justice and decisive action<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against forever chemicals. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/en\/analysis\/publications\/zero-pollution\/cross-cutting-stories\/cross-cutting-story-3-pfas?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that PFAS are present in the blood of nearly every person tested. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I am a PFAS hotspot&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> read another banner during the action by PFAS frontline communities, some of whom have recorded PFAS blood levels more than 63 times higher than the health-based guidance threshold. PFAS pollution is an increasingly concerning issue for Europeans. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreverpollution.eu\/map\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investigations have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that nearly 23,000 sites in Europe are confirmed to be PFAS-contaminated, with an additional 21,500 presumed sites linked to past or ongoing industrial activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In France, over 60,000 people can <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/disclose.ngo\/fr\/article\/polluants-eternels-revelations-sur-une-contamination-record-de-leau-potable-en-france\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no longer drink<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tap water. In Belgium, residents of Ronse &#8211; just 54 km from Brussels &#8211; have discovered severe contamination of their environment and bodies. In Germany, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/max_PFAS_A4_FINAL_SEP8_02.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent study<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 69% of fish are polluted with PFAS<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d the affected citizens reminded von der Leyen in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Letter-to-Ursula-von-der-Leyen-from-PFAS-affected-frontline-communities.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFAS frontline communities have also expressed deep concern over recent statements by Vice-President S\u00e9journ\u00e9 and Commissioner Roswall, suggesting restrictions should be limited to consumer uses of PFAS. Across Europe, people are exposed through drinking water and food, largely driven by emissions from industrial production, use, and waste sites. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Focusing only on consumer uses ignores the largest sources of contamination and fails to effectively address the PFAS pollution crisis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d stressed PFAS-polluted communities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>social, environmental, and economic costs of PFAS pollution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are staggering. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.europa.eu\/doi\/10.2779\/9590509\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a European Commission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study, if current levels of PFAS pollution continue until 2050 without regulatory action, the total cost will reach approximately \u20ac440 billion. Tackling PFAS releases at the source by 2040 could save \u20ac110 billion, whereas treating contaminated water alone would cost up to \u20ac1,7 trillion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than <\/span><b>343,000 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have supported <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/es\/take-action\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calling on European leaders to defend the laws that <\/span><b>protect people and nature, rather than bow to polluters and vested interests.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemical safety is a public interest issue. Decisions must be guided by science, the precautionary principle, and the EU\u2019s treaty obligation to ensure a high level of protection for human health and the environment. Our demands remain clear: we urge the Commission to champion bold initiatives to protect European citizens and the environment<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d [3] the PFAS affected communities stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While political leaders debate with polluters over weakening laws meant to protect citizens, Europe\u2019s chemical pollution crisis continues to escalate. Europeans need decision-makers to deliver REACH\u2019s primary objective \u2013 a high level of protection for human health and the environment \u2013 without delay and without compromise<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d [4] said Tatiana Santos, Head of Chemicals Policy at the European Environmental Bureau.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the PFAS frontline communities in Brussels will also take part in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/es\/pfasforeverchemicals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-level policy event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the European Parliament to discuss accountability, justice and the urgent need for EU action on PFAS.
