We want to present our firsthand testimonies directly to the President of the European Commission to urge immediate action on chemicals legislation\u201d, <\/span><\/i><strong>says PFAS-affected communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFAS, also known as \u201cforever chemicals\u201d are linked to cancer, infertility, thyroid disease, obesity, immune system suppression and many more disorders. PFAS have been dubbed by scientists, regulators, and civil society as the \u201cpoison of the century\u201d for people and the environment. This pollution is considered the \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/idees\/article\/2025\/01\/17\/la-contamination-par-les-pfas-est-le-probleme-de-pollution-le-plus-grave-jamais-rencontre_6502592_3232.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worst pollution crisis humanity has ever faced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 <strong>[2].<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to recent alarming findings by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreverpollution.eu\/lobbying\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forever Lobbying Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which expose how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/jan\/14\/industry-using-tobacco-playbook-to-fend-off-forever-chemicals-regulation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PFAS industry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has, for decades, successfully lobbied to delay and weaken necessary regulations on these highly hazardous chemicals, jeopardizing the health and well-being of all Europeans. Affected communities across Europe are mobilising, demanding a ban on PFAS through a week of action<strong> [3]<\/strong>:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/64ddcda8b19caa2d5d041a02\/t\/67829cc523e3b728f4b06cc5\/1736613064432\/2024-01-18+-+Nieuwsflits+250ste+emmertjes+protest.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pouring buckets of contaminated soil at Chemours\u2019 doorstep in Dordrecht (Netherlands)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/grondrecht.eu\/en\/pfas-in-ons-bier-grondrecht-veroordeelt-de-onzichtbare-vergiftiging-van-ons-drinkwater\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distributing PFAS contaminated beers handed out to workers at chemical factories in Zwijndrecht (Belgium)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and camping in front of the court during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miteni <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trial in Vicenza (Italy).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Joop Keesmaat, from Sliedrecht (The Netherlands), <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stoppfas.nu\/over-ons\"><b>Stop PFAS Stop Chemours<\/b><\/a><b>, states: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemical industry claims a human future is not possible without PFAS. However, with PFAS a human future is not possible at all because PFAS causes cancer, and cancer causes death!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Toon Penen, from Zwijndrecht (Belgium), <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/grondrecht.eu\/\"><b>Grondrecht<\/b><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><b>states:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve seen firsthand how PFAS pollution has impacted our health, our environment, and our future. Together with Grondrecht vzw, we are demanding real action: remediation, transparency, and accountability. This is not just a local issue\u2014it\u2019s a national and European crisis. We need stronger regulations and immediate action to protect communities like ours across Europe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cristina Cola, from Trissino province of Vicenza (Italy), <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mammenopfas.org\/home\"><b>Mammenopfas<\/b><\/a><b>, states<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could never have imagined that my children would have carcinogenic substances in their blood just for drinking the water from the <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aquifer <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or eating the food of our territory. I find it unacceptable that the profit of a few has caused disastrous consequences for the health of at least 350,000 people and ruined forever the environment in which we live<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not the first time that victims of PFAS pollution have sought dialogue with the European Commission. In October 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/20231002-Letter-to-President-Commission.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a previous request for a meeting with Ursula von der Leyen went unanswered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Determined to have their voices heard, PFAS-affected communities took a bold step last night by projecting a large banner onto the facade of the Berlaymont building. However, PFAS are linked to a number of serious health problems, including cancer, infertility, birth defects and immune system disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[3]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxic-Free Europe Now! Week of Action: This campaign is a pan-European call for the European Commission, the European Parliament, and EU Heads of State to commit to a toxic-free Europe and make tackling toxic chemicals in our environment, air, water, and bodies an urgent priority. The coalition is making the following demands:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fully implement the EU\u2019s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability to ensure a toxic-free Europe by 2030.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fix the outdated REACH chemicals control law to fast-track the banning of the most harmful chemicals in consumer products.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implement the EU\u2019s action plan to phase out PFAS, including support for a universal PFAS ban and its ban in specific sectors like toys, cosmetics, packaging, and food contact materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aid communities affected by PFAS pollution, ensuring thorough monitoring, remediation, health support, and other necessary plans. Hold PFAS manufacturers and related companies accountable for the pollution they have caused.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/action.wemove.eu\/sign\/2024-01-ban-forever-chemicals-EN\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxic-Free Europe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> petition has gathered nearly 146,000 signatures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from concerned citizens across Europe.
