CDR can rely on vegetation and soils to absorb CO2 or engineered storing of CO2. Most decarbonisation pathways require some amount of carbon removals (also called negative emissions) to keep warming to 1.5 degrees. Risk-averse climate strategies aim to minimize the reliance on carbon removals as they can have serious land-use impacts, costs, shift responsibility to future generations and be used to delay emissions reductions.

The EU climate policy framework already covers CDR (through the LULUCF Regulation), but the current Fit For 55 revision process is bringing CDR to the foreground of EU ETS and ESR/CARE discussions as well. However, there remains a lot of confusion on what CDR is, is not (for example many CCU processes), what role it can play and how to incentivize it.

How can the EU create a framework for carbon dioxide removal in a way that avoids perverse incentives?

The webinar will take place on April 27 (15:00-16:20).

Agenda
15:00 – 15:05: Welcome and introduction by the hosts:
MEPs Jytte Guteland and Michal Wiezik

15:05 – 15:15: What is carbon dioxide removal and what is not?
Jessica Strefler (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research) (tbc)

15:15 – 15:20: Q&A

15:20 – 15:30: Nature-based removals: BECCS and carbon farming; dispelling myths and identifying opportunities
Michael Norton, European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC)
Célia Nyssens (EEB)

15:30 – 15:35: Q&A

15:35 – 15:45: The future of CDR in the EU:
Duncan McLaren (University of Lancaster)
Ulriikka Aarnio (Climate Action Network Europe)

15:45 – 15:55: Reactions from the host MEPs

15:55 – 16:15: Q&A

16:15 – 16:20: Conclusion
Wijnand Stoefs (CMW)

We look forward to seeing you there!

Save the date for our webinar, jointly organised with Carbon Market Watch, FERN, and CAN Europe on “Carbon Dioxide Removal in the EU”.
