The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) welcomes the initiative and demands stronger provisions to improve e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nvironmental protection through criminal law.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0The revision of the Directive was announced by the Commission in it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s 2021 Work Program<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Environmental Crime Directive from 2008<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[1]<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sets minimum standards for the enforcement of European environmental law at national level. However, in practice the Directive has shown to be insufficient: Interpol<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2]<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0Eurojust<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3]<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have both recorded a major increase in Environmental crimes globally and in Europe.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Evidence from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EEB\u2019s crime and punishment report\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[4], and the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Commission\u2019s own evaluation\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[5] shows the current text of the Environmental Crime Directive does little to prevent and dissuade many of the most lucrative environmental offences in the EU, nor does it help enforcement bodies to detect them.
