{"id":101572,"date":"2020-05-20T14:43:02","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T12:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?p=101572"},"modified":"2020-06-30T19:16:37","modified_gmt":"2020-06-30T17:16:37","slug":"eu-nature-and-farming-plans-welcomed-by-green-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/en\/eu-nature-and-farming-plans-welcomed-by-green-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"EU nature and farming plans welcomed by green groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The EU Commission has today set out its vision for the future of nature and farming policies, as it prepares to put the European Green Deal at the heart of its corona recovery plan.<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/bee-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Bee Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the EU has published its long awaited plans to boost biodiversity and set a new direction of travel for Europe\u2019s food and farming system, with two crucial strategies: one on biodiversity for 2030 and another one on food systems called \u2018Farm to Fork\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the corona crisis continues, an increasing number of scientists are warning about the links between<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/mar\/18\/tip-of-the-iceberg-is-our-destruction-of-nature-responsible-for-covid-19-aoe\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biodiversity loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/may\/07\/promiscuous-treatment-of-nature-will-lead-to-more-pandemics-scientists\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">habitat destruction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-019-0293-3#ref-CR101\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unsustainable agriculture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and current and future threats to human health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EEB is Europe\u2019s largest network of environmental organisations with more than 160 members in over 30 countries. Restoring and protecting nature brings so many benefits, from climate and flood protection to defence against the emergence of new diseases.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is good to see that the European Commission listened to the science in proposing those important commitments, it is now up to Member States to endorse them and have all hands on deck to tackle the biodiversity crisis we are facing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><b>Nature-friendly farming?\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/files\/communication-farm-fork-strategy-fair-healthy-and-environmentally-friendly-food-system_en\"><b>Download the strategy<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Farm to Fork strategy seeks to halve pesticide use on European farms. Targets for cutting fertiliser use and nitrogen pollution are also included, but little is said about transforming our diets to be healthier and more sustainable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Celia Nyssens, EEB Policy Officer for Agriculture said<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Farm to Fork strategy sets a welcome direction of travel but the real moment of truth will come when the EU updates its \u20ac60bn-a-year Common Agricultural Policy. &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The target to cut nitrogen pollution from fertilisers is welcome but far from sufficient. Our environment is overloaded with nitrogen pollution, and the EU must do more to tackle the problem, including by beginning a phase out of the use of all synthetic fertilisers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;However, most conspicuous by its absence is any serious attempt to improve the quality of European diets and end the overproduction and consumption of meat and dairy products. If European governments really want to improve public health, helping farming produce and people consume food that is healthy and sustainable is a great place to start &#8211; in that sense, this strategy is a real missed opportunity.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><b>Reforming the CAP<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside the Strategies, the Commission has published its own analysis of how the Common Agricultural Policy relates to these initiatives and the European Green Deal more broadly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussions about reforming the CAP have been taking place for years, with reforms proposed by the previous Commission<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eeb.org\/commissions-timid-farm-policy-reform-ignores-environmental-crisis-on-europes-farmland\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falling far short of its environmental promises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
