{"id":97841,"date":"2019-02-14T11:22:17","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T10:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/?p=97841"},"modified":"2019-03-13T10:16:27","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T09:16:27","slug":"historic-european-parliament-vote-for-nature-friendly-farming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eeb.org\/de\/historic-european-parliament-vote-for-nature-friendly-farming\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic European Parliament vote for nature-friendly farming"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>MEPs on the European Parliament\u2019s Environment committee have today stood up for higher environmental ambition under the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>MEPs defended our environment and health by listening to scientists\u2019 recommendations [1] and citizens\u2019 demands [2] to ensure that rhetoric on higher environmental ambition is matched by allocated minimum spending for measures to protect nature, the environment and the climate.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s historic vote is the first time that the Environment committee has been given a say on <a href=\"https:\/\/google.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0b72b745a8222140f6076e08b&amp;id=0b075ce1e7&amp;e=494278ec5e\">CAP reform<\/a> alongside the Agriculture committee.<\/p>\n<p>The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) welcomed the vote result.<\/p>\n<p><em>The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is Europe\u2019s largest network of environmental citizens\u2019 organisations with around 150 organisations in more than 30 countries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The EEB has long argued that given the agriculture sector\u2019s huge environmental and climate impact, issues around EU farm subsidies should be granted so-called \u2018co-competence\u2019 between both committees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Dupeux, Agriculture Policy Officer at the European Environmental Bureau (EEB)<\/strong>, congratulated the Environment committee MEPs who championed amendments on maximum livestock density, but she said that the committee\u2019s position falls short of the mark in terms of addressing the extent of the current environmental and economic crisis in the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n<p>Dupeux said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cBy using public money to support agricultural intensification, the EU\u2019s current farm subsidy system exacerbates climate change and environmental destruction. It is damaging to rural communities, public health, and, crucially, current and future generations\u2019 ability to produce healthy and safe food.<\/em><em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile today\u2019s vote in Parliament\u2019s Environment committee shows that MEPs have risen to the challenge of seeking higher environmental ambition in the CAP, given the environmental and climate urgency, what is really needed is a full remodeling of our whole farming system.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Today\u2019s vote was the first in a set of key European Parliament votes on the European Commission\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/google.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=0b72b745a8222140f6076e08b&amp;id=63c19d635a&amp;e=494278ec5e\">proposal for reform of the CAP<\/a> which will cover the years 2021-2027.<\/p>\n<p>A vote in the Agriculture committee will follow at the beginning of March, and an all-MEP vote in the Parliament\u2019s plenary session is scheduled to follow in April.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENDS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[1] https:\/\/ieep.eu\/publications\/agriculture-and-land-management\/future-of-the-cap\/cap-2021-27-proposals-for-increasing-its-environmental-and-climate-ambition<\/p>\n<p>[2] https:\/\/act.wemove.eu\/campaigns\/industrial-farming<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MEPs on the European Parliament\u2019s Environment committee have today stood up for higher environmental ambition under the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
