This document sets out the EEB’s response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the targeted revision of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). It outlines our position that the Directive remains a cornerstone of EU environmental protection, delivering clean water, healthier ecosystems, and essential safeguards for public health and the economy. Rather than reopening or weakening its provisions, we argue that the priority should be on full implementation and enforcement. The response also highlights the risks posed by efforts to dilute existing standards and underscores the importance of maintaining strong, science-based protections for Europe’s water resources.
