CALL FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: Project Assistant (consultancy-based)

We are looking for a consultancy-based project assistant with a focus on research and outreach to Roma-led organisations and Roma activists in environmental justice project

The EEB is looking for a Project Assistant to work with us during a 2-year pilot project on environmental discrimination against Roma communities in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The Project Assistant will work based on a consultancy agreement covering approximately 140 working days spread over around 18 months in 2019/2020.

What you will be doing:

  • Identify Roma-led organisations, Roma activists and other organisations working on or interested in working on environmental discrimination of Roma communities in Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania and Macedonia;
  • Identify cases of environmental injustice and environmental conflicts affecting Roma communities;
  • Work with Roma-led group and activists to gather information on these cases;
  • Collaborate with a leading European university in gathering information on cases of environmental conflict and systematising them;
  • Provide capacity-building to Roma-led groups and activists on the work around environmental justice in cooperation with the EEB;
  • Assist in organising events in the project region and Brussels;
  • Advise and comment on project reports and policy recommendations.

We are looking for a candidate:

  • With an educational background in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Journalism, Environmental Sciences or similar with at least a first university degree;
  • who is fluent in spoken and written English and who has strong communication skills;
  • who brings in experience in working with grassroots level NGOs and activists in the region, in particular with Roma-led groups and organisations;
  • who has experience in on-the-ground research on environmental and/or human rights issues as a scientific researcher, journalist or NGO activist;
  • who preferably comes from a Roma community or has a very good network amongst Roma-led groups;
  • who is based in the region (Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romania or FYR Macedonia) and who is able to travel in the area;
  • who has a strong interest in working on environmental justice and environmental discrimination against Roma communities;
  • who can work as a freelancer based on a consultancy agreement and is available as soon as possible.


  • We are looking for a freelance project assistant. We will offer you a consultancy agreement over approximately 140 working days spread over two project years with the main part of the work to be done February – October 2019. The allocation of working days will be discussed with the chosen candidate.
